“Sleep is the Best Meditation” – Dalai Lama
I was browsing on my Facebook and I stumbled on an image of Dalai Lama with a quote that says “Sleep Is The Best Meditation”. I have to admit, I am not a meditation guru nor a seasoned meditation practitioner. In fact, I have just resumed the practice only 6 months back. (I was introduced to mindfulness meditation in my early 20s). Meditation is a funny thing, you would not realize the wonder it does to you until you stopped practicing it.
But if we are to talk about sleeping, I sure do have a lot to say on the subject. No, seriously. My sleep habit has undergone a huge change during my college years until now. I used to have difficulty falling asleep in college years, probably due to the mind having excessive unspent energy that keeps me awake deep into the night.
But in my working days and further into the period when I was running my own business, sleep happens naturally. And then divorce and business failure wreck my sleep habit. I’m sure most of you would experience some changes in your sleep habit and would realize that a good quality sleep will do wonder to you the next morning.
Deep Sleep is the Key
I always associate meditation with the result of having a calm, peaceful mind after the session. And if we are to achieve the same refreshing effect that meditation could, then nothing less than a deep quality sleep will do that. I think the keyword that is missing from the statement, that sleep is the best meditation is “Deep Sleep”.
Ever gone to bed with a dozen of worries on your head, or burdened with negative emotions and thought? Or how about how sleep is torture during a spell of depression? When you sleep without a calm and peaceful mind, then you wake up weary and tired, not much better than the state before you slept.
I know that there are facts that compared the compared delta brain waves of sleeping and meditation. It is said to be around 0.5-2Hz. It is also said that deep sleep has a restorative effect on our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual energy.
Well, I am not going to dispute that, but we are again in the age where we are burdened with responsibilities of career and family. Not to mention the stress that comes with meeting financial ends. It is a blessing for many that sleep, in any forms would eventually come. As of whether it is a night of deep restorative sleep, that is a privilege.
Deep sleep becomes elusive, and yet much needed.
Like it or not, we can pride ourselves on getting as little sleep as possible. We could go juggling multiple tasks and being everywhere at once. But it doesn’t do us good, especially on our health and the results that we are getting. It could even cause burn-outs which may take us even extra efforts to recover from. No, we do not even want to go to that.
So, if it near impossible to get a good restorative sleep the conventional way, then I figure I have to tweak the process around. Instead of hoping for a deep sleep that could have the restorative benefit to the mind, I listened to guided meditation audios before sleeping. It helps to bring the mind to a calm and peaceful state. And as I went to sleep in this mental state, it is no surprise that I woke up with a clearer refreshed mind the morning. Call it a mental sleeping pill if you want, but at least it works for me.
Since late 2015, I’ve been exploring guided meditation audios (along with Law of Attraction and Energy Clearance), and to my delight, I found at least two that does the job of guiding the mind to calm down. Especially when I overworked my mind with stress and anxiety. It is an extremely relaxing experience as I felt my thought process slowing down in just minutes as I listened to the meditation audio.
You could either try this Clear Mind which has a demo or Attract Abundance Guided Meditation. I’ve personally bought the Attract Abundance and it works for me each and every time.
Hi there, isn’t it a conundrum? You need the deep restorative sleep to help your anxious mind relax and rejevenate yet it is this very thing that your anxiety denies you of.
How do you guarantee getting into that deepest sleep cycle? How effective are the guided audio medications at actually getting you to sleep?
Thanks, Kris
Hi Kris,
Yes indeed it is a conundrum. In an ideal situation, we would have no problem getting into a deep sleep, thus enjoying all the restorative benefits it brings. But then, life is far from perfect and sometimes we do suffer from sleep disorder or to a serious case of insomnia.
I would really like to guarantee that meditation can get you into the deepest sleep, but I think I can only do so from my own experience and those I know who practiced at least a 10 minutes of meditation before sleeping. But I can definitely guarantee that sleeping with my mind in turmoil is sure to wake up drained and exhausted.
As of whether how effective is the guided audio meditations, you probably could try the Clear Mind where they have a 5 minutes demo on their website and see if there’s any difference to your sleep pattern.
Thanks.
Kenny
Hi Kenny, Great article. I love the idea of a non-medicinal sleep aid. Much healthier I’m sure. My problem isn’t actually getting to sleep, it’s staying asleep. I always seem to wake up around 3 in the morning and often times have trouble getting back to sleep. I’m sure I’m missing out on the deep sleep you refer to. Do guided meditations work to help you to stay asleep and get to this deep restful state? Thanks.
Hi,
This is an interesting situation. I’m not sure if waking up at 3am deprive you of your deep sleep. Some people feel fresh and yet some people feel drowsy waking up at such hour. I have cases of waking up in the middle of the night, 3-4am. I was alert and yet I know I need to get back to sleep. There was a couple of time I tried using one of the guided meditation audio. It kind of work for me as in slow down the thought and it is easier to fall asleep again.
Kenny.
I completely agree. Sleep is imperative. Not only do we actually need it to physically survive. It is imperative for our mental and emotional health.
I’m really into hypnosis as well. I use recordings every night and morning to re-program my mind 🙂
Have you ever heard of Faster EFT. I use this method too, and it has helped me a lot.
Great post, and thanks for sharing
Hi Natalie,
Thanks for reading. I’ve not heard of Faster EFT. Do you have a blog on this? Or can you share some relevant information? Thanks.
Kenny
Kenny, I’ve been wanting to try meditation for a long time. Without any guidance, sometimes I just try to “clear my mind” and “think about my breathing” or “think about a shape like a circle or square.”
That works for a few seconds and I’m right back to my mind racing. I’m going to try Clear Mind to see if I get any different results.
Thank you.
Hi Jeff,
In its pure sense, meditation is not about thinking. It is about observing the nature of our thought, our sensation, our emotion. Without a proper guru, it is very hard to practice the traditional method. You can try the “Clear Mind” demo to see if there’s any effect on your mind. Do share with me the result after you’ve tried it.
Thanks.
Kenny
Hey Kenny, I never tried guided meditation before sleep before. Does it help you fall asleep? Or does it just help you have ‘deep sleep’? And what is ‘deep sleep’ anyway – Is it the same as REM sleep? Or is it just falling asleep with a positive mindset?
Thanks for sharing,
-Matt
Hi Matt,
Guided meditation helps calm the mind in a sense that worries and stress does not grip our mind. In a relaxed state, it is easier to fall asleep. Deep sleep is not REM sleep. REM is a stage where you would have rapid eye movement, increased heart rates and dreams. Deep sleep is the stage before you entered REM sleep. Deep sleep is where the body repair itself and strengthen the immune system. Scientifically it is the stage of a sleep that we would normally undergo. But as we age, the period of deep sleep shorten.
What I experienced is a qualitative result as I’ve tried going to sleep with guided meditation that calms the mind. By doing that I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed without any mental fatigue. If I am to based on the theoretical knowledge which I looked up here , then I suppose guided meditation calms the mind, which makes it easier to go into deep sleep.
Kenny.
If that’s what helps me get a creative mind then I should probably give this a try. I usually sleep very late and wake up early morning, I don’t usually get enough sleep. I haven’t been able to adjust my sleeping time ,even when I’m not busy at night, my sleep just comes late at night. I will have to use your tips to rest well. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Joseph,
Thanks for reading and sharing your comment. Hope you get your fair share of deserved rest.
Cheers,
Kenny
