5 Adaptogenic Herbs to Fight Anxiety & Stress

Stress and anxiety seem like a modern health issue, but if you do some research, you will realize that these health issues have existed for as long as humans have. In the old days, people suffered acute stress due to trauma. The likelihood of suffering chronic stress was rare under fair circumstances. However, in this age, you can find teens and pre-teens stressed about (seemingly) trivial things that our ancestors wouldn’t have bothered in their time.

However, the remedy to stress has been the same since ages. It is only now that we have turned to use SSRIs and other antidepressants. Since centuries, people have been using many herbs to cure all their ailments successfully. Most of the drugs on the market use similar chemical composition; however, they are synthetic. And therefore, more likely to have side effects compared to the herbal remedies. I have found that the five herbs given below are great for treating both anxiety and stress.

Schisandra is a plant well-known in the Russian & Chinese culture. This plant bears fruit which resembles berries and is often used as both food and medicine. Now, you might be aware of the fact that adaptogens do not only relieve our stress; they also increase our ability to deal with the damage. Schisandra is one of those adaptogens. It also helps increase our lifespan, and increase immunity to disease in general. In ancient times, it was given to patients post-surgery for a speedy recovery.

Schisandra has a compound in it, which goes by the name of schizandrin. It is now widely used to create a drug that performs the function of protecting the liver. Chinese often use it as a fruit in their regular diet.

This fruit is known to have a good effect on one’s mental health. It makes your brain think faster and enhances your focus. It can also help lower the testosterone levels in women, so it is great for treating symptoms of PCOD as well.

Another amazing herb for alleviating the symptoms of stress and anxiety is Eleuthero. It also goes by the name of Siberian ginseng. The name might suggest that it is a product of Russia, but it is also found in other regions of Asia such as China & Japan etc. Another name for this herb is touch-me-not.

This herb has been used by Chinese medical experts for as long as the past twenty centuries. It serves as an anti-stress and anti-inflammatory medicine. It is commonly used for athletic performances because it provides a boost for energies. Since it is a variant of ginseng normally found in the regions of Asia, you can expect it to have properties that assist with being physically active. It also helps ease fatigue, and continuous use can help deal with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) as well.

Researches that are recorded in the Russian language suggest that Siberian ginseng has a positive effect on stress. However, it was found that severe stress cannot be cured with Eleuthero alone. Instead, you would need proper medication for that. Do not try to use this drug instead of your prescribed medication. If you wish to give it a go, consult a herbal doctor.

Kratom is a recently discovered plant-based drug that has gained a controversial reputation across the globe. While the drug was initially introduced as a medicinal plant, it quickly led to cases of overdose. It is a tropical tree that is native to Southeast Asia. It is said that the leaves of this plant can have a psychotropic effect on the subject.

While the legality of this drug is hard to establish as of yet, this drug has become popular in the wellness community. You can find it in many forms such as gum, extract or powder. You can use it in whatever form you prefer as well. While some people smoke up the leaves of Kratom, some brew a tea out of them. If you don’t intend to use it for recreational purposes, I recommend that you drink Kratom tea.

I have also seen people consume it in the form of pills or extract. Kratom is known to help alleviate stress and induce a euphoric feeling in the user. The high lasts for quite some time; I prefer it over cannabis strains because I find it safer.

This herb probably should have made the top of the list. This particular root is found in the arctic regions, and Siberians have used it for centuries for various purposes. It also goes by the name of arctic root or golden root. It is not only great for dealing with mental stress, but it also provides relief from physical stress as well. Rhodiola, when brewed in a tea relieves any stress trapped in the body.

Researches conducted on Russian cadets suggest that those who took Rhodiola instead of a placebo felt better after their long night duty. You can conveniently find Rhodiola extract in the form of capsules; many well-known companies manufacture Rhodiola in pill form as well. Do not consume this herb more than prescribed by your health specialist, or it can have adverse effects.

Another herb that works perfectly against stress and anxiety and strengthens the human body is Cordyceps. It is mostly found in China. It is a type of fungus that grows on the larvae of caterpillars. This herb is relatively rare, and you might find it hard to acquire as well. Even if you do, it might put a strain on your budget. But the effectiveness of this herb is unquestionable.

The most common use of this herb across the globe is male sexual problems. Although it is not exactly used for curing depression and anxiety, the adaptogenic properties ensure that your body keeps working perfectly. If the hormones aren’t imbalanced, you are not likely to suffer from stress.

So, these are a few herbs that can help you handle your stress and anxiety better than any SSRI. Just make sure you do not consume any of these herbs for more than the prescribed limit. Stay safe!
